Black Redstart is a common breeding bird in Europe but is an extremely rare breeder in Scotland with 0-1 breeding records annually listed in Birds of Scotland. So it was interesting when the Fluke Street, Bird Observatory occupants caught one on Sunday morning
The bird had no tail and a lot of downy feathers. This bird was unlikely to have crossed the north sea from Scandinavia. We’re unlikely ever to find out where the bird came from but sightings like this prove we still have lots to learn about migration.
