Tuesday 24th March comments: The preparation for the start of the new visitor season continues to gather pace as the 1st April looms ever closer. The visitor centre has had a deep clean whilst the footpaths have been inspected and the island is almost ready.
However it’s not just ourselves preparing for the summer months as our neighbours have also been busy. Today the Northern lighthouse Board (who operate the main Lighthouse on the island) took advantage of the good weather and the fact very few seabirds have returned, to remove various items from the main lighthouse.
Due to the size and weight of the items, it was decided to airlift off so as mid-afternoon approached, the helicopter arrived, hooked up the items up before flying them to the nearby waiting Pharos (the Northern Lighthouse Boards boat). A job well done and who said island life was dull?
On another note more migrants arrived with the first Wheatear of the year, a hatrick of raptors including Kestrel, Sparrowhawk and Merlin, whilst an outgoing Woodcock completed the bird highlights.
