Sunday 12th July commentsWe have lift off! Our first Kittiwake chicks have now taken to the wing joining all the other breeding species which now boast fledglings (with only Fulmar chicks to go). Kittiwakes have had troubled times over the last ten years or so but it appears we are heading for a reasonable breeding season which is good news for all concerned.

The first chicks took to the wing on Thursday and over the next few weeks we’ll hopefully have many more as young birds will experience flight for the very first time. With numbers of breeding pairs up on last year, have we now turned the corner from the slump of recent years?

Only time will tell but for now, its great to see Kittiwake youngsters flying and next stop Fulmars (which wont be until late August!).
