Only second record in twenty years!

Saturday 29th October comments: It’s been one of those years. The variety of birds which have been recorded on the island this year has been impressive (a record number but more on that later) and today the theme of unusual arrivals continued.

Our four Long-tailed Tits which have been present since Tuesday were once again resident in the bushes near the Bird Observatory and all four were caught and ringed. These are the first Long-tailed Tits to grace the island since 2011.

However even more excitement followed as a Coal Tit was discovered amongst them; a Tit flock on the island! Coal Tits are also rare (this was only the second record in twenty years) and only the 12th record ever for the island. It just shows you what migrates through the island and with a few more weeks remaining, what else will be discovered? Its’ been 11 years since our last Blue Tit…
